VW Group: Cut production of the VW ID.3 and Cupra Born again due to low demand

The sales of the electric cars of the VW Group are not expected and that is why the German company reduced the production of the VW ID.3 and Cupra Born for the second time within two months. Specifically, the company reduced the shifts at its factory in Zwickau, from three to two, saying that this decision was taken in order to maintain the production operation and the future viability of the factory, as it reacts to the sluggish demand for electric cars.

Last month Volkswagen suspended production of the VW ID.3 and Cupra Born at its plants in Zwickau and Dresden in Germany for two weeks due to reduced demand, and had also temporarily halted production of the ID.4, ID. 5, Audi Q4 e-tron and Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron.

The factory in Zwickau has an annual capacity of 360,000 cars, but last year it produced around 218,000 cars due to reduced demand for its electric models. The German carmaker said in October it would not extend the fixed-term contracts of 269 workers at its Zwickau plant, which makes only electric models, because of reduced demand for them.

- The power remains the same: 170 hp (entry-level version) / 190 hp / 231 hp / 326 hp for the sporty VZ version.
- The theoretical maximum range announced goes from 593 km (WLTP combined cycle) to... 600 km.
